If you're in the market for bearded dragon cages, you have a few options to consider. The most common choice is a glass aquarium tank, which offers the advantages of easy visibility and good heat retention. However, there are other options to explore.
Wire cages are not recommended, as the gaps between the wires make it difficult to maintain the proper temperature and create an appropriate habitat. If you must use a wire cage, make sure the wire is coated with plastic to prevent injury to your pet.
Some owners prefer to build wooden enclosures, which can be customized to any size. Wooden enclosures can retain heat, though not as well as glass, and are sturdy when properly lined and sealed. It is recommended that adult bearded dragons have at least a 50-gallon enclosure, but if you are building your own, consider making it at least 70 gallons. Be sure to waterproof the enclosure with polyurethane or a similar material, ensure joints are watertight with caulk, and allow the enclosure to dry for several days before adding your pet.
Pet stores may suggest purchasing a tall glass enclosure, but be cautious as bearded dragons are not natural climbers and may not utilize the vertical space. If you opt for a tall enclosure, ensure there is a safe and sturdy way for your dragon to reach the higher parts of the cage. Provide a hiding place near the top as this may become your dragon's favorite spot. When handling your pet in a tall enclosure, approach from the front to avoid startling them as they may perceive you as a predator coming from above.
